Aldi's Glass Toaster Is The Kitchen Gadget Your Breakfast Needs

Gambar
We're five months into 2020, and it's safe to say that technology has proven itself invaluable this year. Thank goodness for video calls, and being able to order wine in three taps of the phone from your own home. Yet, while clever tech may have allowed us to keep going during lockdown, there's one thing we've long been struggling with – finding the perfect cycle for toasting bread, a seemingly impossible feat. Until now. The days of overly burnt and under-done toast are over. No more pressing the pop-up button multiple times in panic – plenty more perfectly toasted slices for all day snacking. Aldi is selling glass toasters and to be honest, we're kicking ourselves we didn't think of it first. This ingenious piece of kit is a part of the company's Ambiano brand, which makes kitchen tech at affordable prices. "Take the guess-work out of toasting," as Aldi puts it, for just £24.99. With a removable glass window and six different settings, plus optio...

This Small Gadget Helps Keep My Kitchen Sink Clog-Free No Matter How Many Dishes I’m Doing

Gambar
© Provided by The Daily Beast Picture this: You're doing the myriad of dishes that are piling up in your sink because it's quarantine and you're cooking a heck of a lot more. You forgot that the other night, after dumping out pasta into a strainer, you missed and a handful went straight for the drain. You look down and see that your sink, still full of dishes, has inexplicably clogged. Now, you're forced to reach into dirty water and fish out the soggy noodles that are covering the drain, preventing the water from subsiding. This was a constant for me, until I found the Kitchen SinkShroom. Unlike traditional drain covers, the Kitchen SinkShroom doesn't just catch debris before it goes down the drain, it also prevents it from clogging, no matter how many pieces of pasta or vegetables pile up. Other drain covers do a great job of containing the nastiness, but the SinkShroom has a unique center cylinder that, paired with the construction of the ...

Gambar
If dad is still working with a mismatched assemblage of dull, damaged or deteriorating knives, a proper set of Henckels will set him on course for better chopping, slicing and dicing in the years ahead. As it happens, a quality 15-piece set of Henckels Forged Accent knives is on sale directly through the retailer for just $130 -- down from its normal price of $180. These sleek, sharp kitchen knives would make a fine Father's Day gift for the foodie dad or to upgrade your own kitchen weaponry. Forged knives are fashioned from a solid piece of steel -- in this case, German steel -- and pounded into shape, not stamped out of a sheet of metal. This generally signals quality and the knife is likely to be stronger, last longer and hold its edge bet...

Table Scraps: Kitchen Waste Is Often Water Waste

Gambar
Welcome to Table Scraps, an intermittent series on the growing problem of food waste and what some eateries, officials, farms, institutes, and everyday people are doing right. This isn't a guilt trip, just a way to unpack initiatives attempting to reduce kitchen waste and food loss, as more than 40 percent of all food is wasted in the U.S. We're exploring backyard composting to city programs, restaurant tips to technology, and anything related to this global issue. Heat up those leftovers and settle in. The only part I don't like about recent hand washing graphics I've seen around is the last step: Use a paper towel to turn off the water. Is the water running the whole time you're drying? And during the whole 20-second wash? How much water is just gushing away here? I am in no way condoning a change in this procedure at this time. Go nuts. But maybe we can make up for lost water in other ways, in other rooms of the house. Like the kitchen. And since wasting water ha...

This Handheld Vacuum Is the Secret to My Clean Kitchen

Gambar
To be perfectly honest, I bought a handheld vacuum because I thought it was cute. I don't have enough storage space for a full-sized vacuum—nor, really, an apartment big enough to warrant using one at all. But I do make my fair share of messes (stars: they're just like us!), especially in the kitchen, where a broom and a dustpan isn't always the right team for the job. A little research led me to the Black+Decker Dustbuster, which, at 2.6 pounds, was objectively adorable. "We need this little vacuum!!!" I squealed to my boyfriend, turning my laptop around so he could see it. He ignored me, I bought it anyway, and our kitchen has been cleaner ever since. The Black+Decker Dustbuster is appealing for a few reasons, namely that it's compact, inexpensive, and features a rotatable nozzle with brush attachment for dusty and hard-to-reach spots. I thought I would use it sporadically, under very specific circumstances, like when cleaning my highest shelves or the crack...

Planning your dream kitchen layout

Gambar
Western Australia's hard border will remain closed for the foreseeable future, so we will continue to be an island within an island for some time to come. With interstate and overseas travel on the backburner, holidays at home will be all the go, with many consumers redirecting their holiday budget to home improvements, and new kitchens are often top of the list. It's a good idea to start with a comprehensive guide like the HIA Guide to Kitchen Planning and Design to efficiently use space, create practical storage options and working space with clearances around appliances. If you have a bit more space to plan with, there are many different kitchen layouts to consider, including peninsulas, circular layouts and layouts that include drop-down seating areas, technology alcoves and butler pantries or sculleries. However, it's best to start with some more common layouts such as: Galley – where the kitchen runs along the walls of both sides of the space and is typically suited t...

Want to start a compost pile for your garden? Here are tips on how to build one with yard and kitchen waste.

Most importantly, it should include both carbon-rich and nitrogen-rich plant materials. Carbon-rich materials are generally "old, brown, dead things," Yiesla said, such as fallen leaves, dead plants, old perennial stalks, or straw from Halloween decor. Large branches will work, but they should be cut up into smaller pieces. Composting 101: Stupid-Easy Compost Making in Piles & Bins

Comfort food haven Coda Bar & Kitchen has closed for good

Gambar
A 13-year-old restaurant in the South End has shuttered, adding to a growing list of restaurants that have closed amid the coronavirus pandemic. Coda Bar & Kitchen will not reopen once restaurants are allowed to return in Phase 2 of the state's four-phase reopening plan. According to a Coda Restaurant Group representative, the lease for the space was set to expire around the end of the year without an optional for renewal. When considering a number of factors associated with reopening the restaurant, the representative said the restaurant group "made the difficult decision to close their doors earlier than anticipated." Coda's sister restaurants SRV and The Salty Pig, which are under the same ownership, will remain open. The South End eatery opened in 2007 and specialized in American comfort food, serving burgers, baked macaroni and cheese, chickpea fritters, and shrimp and grits. It also hosted a regular bring-your-own-vinyl brunch party, where guests ...

Coyotes Cuisine: In the Kitchen with Team Chef Mario Maura

Gambar
Pasta, along with proteins -- meat -- are menu staples for the Coyotes. "They also love raviolis as well as any of the fish preparations," said Maura. "When we get any fish it's the best quality we can get, so it's super fresh and they are huge fans of that, as well as chicken products, honestly. It's just chicken, right? Every single athlete that's trying to put on weight and gain muscle is trying to eat as much chicken as possible, and I think a lot of these guys go for that as well." And when it comes to chicken, or any type of poultry or red meat for that matter, Maura provides pounds of it - about 20 to 25 per meal. "When we [buy] our proteins, when we source our chicken, our steak, our fish, we are really buying the highest quality we can," he said. "We're trying to stay away from confined animal feeding operations and stuff like that. It's as good as we can get it. "I try to incorporate as many vegetables and as muc...

Are Kitchen Pot Racks Best Left Hanging in the 1980s?

Gambar
YES THEY WERE THE VANGUARD of a trend that still dominates today: home kitchens that emulate those in professional restaurants. In a retrospective for the National Kitchen and Bath Association, designer and kitchen historian Ellen Cheever noted that, by the status-craving 1980s, manufacturers were catering to "gourmet cooks." Chef Wolfgang Puck became a celebrity. The word "foodie" was born. In our more minimalist times, cookware has again retreated neatly under counters, but lately some folks are appreciating anew the... This Kitchen Has 14 Appliances AND a Fireplace

Gambar
From House Beautiful Designer Jocelyn Chiappone knew up front that the house she'd found in the seaside community of Matunuck, Rhode Island, to accommodate her family—nine deep during summer breaks and holidays—would need some fine-tuning. Her mission? "To take the house from '???'—that was the text message my mother sent after seeing pictures online—and turn it into our forever home," she says. First on the docket: converting a series of dark, back-of-house rooms into a bright, multifunctional kitchen. With distinct zones that easily transition from breakfast hour to cocktail hour, there's enough space for everyone to pitch in when cooking up a sizable family celebration. 1. Casting a Glow Natural light was one of the most important elements of this redesign. "I knew I wanted east- and west- facing light so that the room was constantly illuminated," Chiappone says. Adding dormers allowed even more light to pour in throughout the day. Exterior doors ...

We Asked 8 Photographers To Document Their Go-To Kitchen Cupboard Staples

Why are anchovies your ultimate go-to?Because they are so easy and versatile. They can be melted into sauces, blended into dressings, topped on anything from pizza to salads and more. Using them elevates everything. Also omega-3s!How many times a week do you eat them?It varies a lot — probably 2 or 3.What's your favourite way to eat anchovies? My go-to pasta sauce always starts with melting anchovies and garlic in olive oil, then I freestyle what I add next depending on what I have on hand — likely tomatoes, olives, capers. This started with a Gwenyth Paltrow recipe of pasta with tuna, olive and capers and parsley and has evolved as I am generally bad at following recipes. Homemade anchovy mayonnaise is amazing on everything - steak, lamb, potatoes, asparagus, just to name a few. If I have good quality anchovies, I like to use them on top of salads, or for a party, wrapped around a boiled quails egg. Or, simply on toast with a normal jammy egg.Have you ever had a kitchen fail with y...

“Mom’s kitchen smelled of fresh cooking and cigarettes” an ode to my first-generation mom

Gambar
I'm a baby-boomer. American-born Mom was the child of Polish Jews scrapping by through the Great Depression in the land of plenty. They lost everything. Nothing went to waste ever again. We barely threw out a garbage bag once a week. Mom was a true-blue American tomboy, loving baseball. Her favorite times of year were the baseball and holiday seasons. I'm sure she danced in her grave when the Cubs won the World Series. She smoked three packs of cigarettes a day but not one smoke on Shabbat. But she never missed a Cubs game on television while my father turned a blind eye. I can hear her crying because the pandemic is sickening the 2020 baseball season. She loved wintertime songs, so many written by Jewish immigrants and their firstborn. The music reminded her of good times during a rocky early life. Judy Garland's rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" captivated Mom. Carl Sigman's 1949 lyrics to "A Marshmallow World," pe...

Keep Your Busy Kitchen Organized With These Mixing Bowls

Gambar
I have been cooking a lot recently. I haven't tried baking sourdough (yet) but I have been cooking pretty much every meal I've been eating. And while I enjoy cooking, it has still been a change of pace. I'm not used to cooking this much. And so, I've been looking for ways to simplify my cooking process, to make things more beautiful, appealing, restaurant worthy, and things that make my kitchen, a space usually overflowing with bowls and pots and pans, easily manageable. And then I stumbled across these stoneware bowls. Made from stoneware they are heavy and sturdy, but not too heavy, which makes them easily maneuverable for whisking, pouring, and serving. The interior is rounded, which is a subtle detail that allows for easier mixing, and they are coated with a non-stick and scratch resistant finish that holds up to any utensil. They come in a set of three, the largest one for big mixes like batter, a salad, or as a jumbo popcorn bowl, the medium size is fabulous for c...

"Because I don't know about your house, but it's always, 'What do you want for dinner?' 'I don't know.'" Nelson has taken that know-how and ramped it up to a remarkable level, cranking out 2,000 meals a day for Feeding Tampa Bay and its lead in the fight against Bay Area hunger. "I'll have it up to probably 3,000 by the end of this," Nelson said. I can't tell if he's joking or being serious. If you're cooking more than ever these knife sets should be in your kitchen

Gambar
A good kitchen knife can mean the difference between a joyful 10-minute prep time and a 30-minute prep time that's a major chore — with a side of unwanted nicks and cuts. Now that we're all probably cooking much more than usual, saving time in the kitchen is becoming more valuable than ever. Truth is, the typical home cook just needs a high-quality, sharp chef's knife and a few other options like a serrated knife and a smaller paring knife. If you're holding on to old, dull knives because they feel safer, get rid of them immediately! Dull knives are dangerous because food can roll around awkwardly under the blade, making it difficult to do simple slicing and dicing. The "best" knife is different for everyone — even celebrity chefs! It should feel comfortable in your hand and it should feel like an extension of you. Here are some of our favorites. Some may be a little pricey but they're worth the investment. Always handwash knives (do NOT put them in the di...
